Today, I thought I’d share a bit about my writing process.
Believe it or not, my primary writing tool is a good old-fashioned pen. But not just any pen—it’s the act of handwriting itself that really gets my creative juices flowing. I prefer using unlined notebooks, typically the kind sold as visual art diaries. There’s something about the freedom of a blank page that helps my brain work better. Lined paper just feels too restrictive.
The process of writing by hand allows me to connect with my thoughts in a way that typing on a keyboard just doesn’t. It’s slower, sure, but it gives me the time to think through my ideas and plot points. Plus, there’s a certain satisfaction in filling up pages with my own handwriting.
Another tool in my writing arsenal is a trusty dictaphone. I use it to dictate certain scenes. It somewhat depends on my mood. There’s something freeing about being able to write while walking or folding washing or just being out and about. Sometimes dictation is faster, but often handwriting is more fun.
Once I have a good chunk of my draft written by hand, the next step is dictating the whole scene and transcribing. I use transcription software to convert my spoken words into text. This part of the process gives me a chance to read what I’ve written so far, keep the story fresh, and also allow me to make tiny little edits, though I try to not to unleash the inner editor until the first draft is done.
After transcribing, the real work begins. I do all my revisions and edits on my PC, often using Google Drive. This tool is a lifesaver, allowing me to access my files from other devices and when I’m on the move. For example, while waiting for my takeaway order, I can get my phone out and edit a couple of paragraphs. It’s incredibly convenient.
Whenever I need to rewrite a whole scene, I go back to my roots and write it by hand. There’s something about the tactile nature of handwriting that helps me reimagine and restructure scenes more effectively. It might be slower than typing, but it’s worth it for the clarity and creativity it brings.
My writing process might seem a bit slow and old-fashioned to some, but it works beautifully for me. It allows me to engage with my work deeply and thoughtfully, ensuring that every word is deliberate and meaningful.
So, there you have it—a peek into my writing world. It’s a blend of old-school handwriting, modern dictation, and digital editing. This unique mix keeps me connected to my creative process and helps me bring my stories to life in the most authentic way possible.
